Week 2 Premier League News

The end of week 2 for the Premiership confirmed two things, firstly that two of the pre season favourites, Chelsea and Liverpool, were going to be strong contenders and that new boys Hull, West Brom and Stoke may not be the push overs that was predicted. In fact Hull has had an excellent start lying joint 3rd in the table. Manchester United managed a last gasp win to ensure they are back in the hunt and relegated last seasons strong performer, Portsmouth, to the bottom of the table.
The last few days of the transfer window will now be crucial to all the clubs looking to secure last minute players to bolster squads.
Teams like Arsenal are desperate to sign a quality player but do not have the spending power of Man Utd and Chelsea. The long running saga of Berbatov’s move to Man U from Tottenham will release funds for Tottenham and give Man Utd some serious fire power up front. Last years buy of the season Rocky Santa Cruz looks happy to stay with Blackburn but I wonder if Mark Hughes is reflecting on his move from Blackburn to Man City where the owner is making headlines away from football and maybe limiting Hughes’ ability to do his job properly.
West Ham also seem to have some behind the scenes troubles and the continuing injury problems are having a negative effect on their performances.
The next few weeks will fashion the way the season will end up. It already looks as if the league will end up in its usual three tiers with four or five teams vying for the title, the next six or seven fighting for European places and the remainder playing for Premier survival.
How long will it be before there is talk again of a European super league with the top four Premiership teams joining it?
